A BLOG ABOUT WELLBEING OF OUR MIGHTY NERVOUS SYSTEM
THE NEURON
Nerve cells or neurons are most complicated and specialized cell of our body. Those cells define us. They’re structurally and functionally unique. They communicate with each other in unique ways. They are the basic building block of our nervous system. All our works, thoughts, behaviors, depend upon it. The brain is what it is because of the structural and functional properties of interconnected neurons.
The nervous system is made up of the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord, peripheral nervous system. Neurons vary in size, shape, and structure depending on their role and location. However, nearly all neurons have three essential parts: a cell body, an axon, and dendrites. Neurons send signals using action potentials. An action potential is a shift in the neuron’s electric potential caused by the flow of ions in and out of the neural membrane.

‘The human brain has 100 billion neurons, each neuron connected to 10 thousand other neurons. Sitting on your shoulders is the most complicated object in the known universe.’
