When we talk about tumors, an unknown fear springs down from our brain. Every age and every strata of people is afraid of tumors. If tumors occur in the brain, it’s so devastating. That’s why the awareness of brain tumors is very necessary.

#1: ITS NOT SO COMMON
It’s not so common. In comparison to tumors of other organs, brain tumors are rare. Most of them are metastatic. That means most of them are from other organs. These types of tumors are in a very advanced stage. They are difficult to treat. Still distance metastatic tumors are not so common. Primary malignant brain tumor is a rare type of cancer accounting for only about 1.4% of all new cancer cases.
#2: IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY AGE
There is no age bar for brain malignancy. It can occur to any age and sex. In children they are deadliest. Glioma is the most common primary brain tumour and originates from supporting brain cells that are called glial cells and 50% of all brain tumors begin as benign tumors. Another brain tumour called ‘Astrocytomas’ are so named because their cells look like stars ; the word ‘astro’ in Latin means “star”.
#3: THE CAUSE IS UNKNOWN IN MOST OF TIME
The primary brain tumor is mostly idiopathic. It means the cause is unknown. People who have been exposed to ionizing radiation—such as radiation therapy used to treat cancer and radiation exposure have an increased risk of brain tumors. Apart from it, several toxins, smoking can increase the chance of primary brain tumors. Several genetic diseases cause brain tumors. There are many familial tumors.
#4: BRAIN TUMOUR IS FATAL
Brain tumor is fatal. The brain is closed space. Even small over growth can cause big compression to vital centres of the brain. It can lead to several problems like prolonged headache, vomiting, seizure, urinary issues, memory loss, vision loss, head reeling etc. But no symptom is specific for brain tumors.Other symptoms may include personality changes, eye weakness, nausea or vomiting, difficulty speaking or comprehending.

#5: MANY TUMORS ARE TREATABLE
Benign brain tumors are treatable to a greater extent. Brain surgery helps in removing many of them. But the most important thing is early diagnosis. If you can do an early suspicion outcome is fantastic. There are many nice screening images. The imaging techniques are advancing in geometric progression. Now it’s easy to diagnose even the smallest tumour.
#6: ADVANCE TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE NOW
Medical science is making much progress in multiple fields. Very advanced surgeries are planned nowadays. Experienced surgeons can remove cancer at very early stages. Apart from it other modalities like chemotherapy and radiotherapy are doing much advance in treatment with not ruining the lifestyle of patients.

#7: DON’T EVER THINK YOU HAVE BRAIN TUMOUR BY GOOGLING YOUR COMMON SYMPTOMS
Don’t ever think you have a brain tumor without solid proof of brain tumor. If you have any neurological symptoms visit a neurologist near you and do a proper evaluation. If after clinical and radiological evaluation he says it’s a brain tumor then accept it. There is less than 1% chance that you will have a brain tumor in your lifetime. So don’t consider yourself so unlucky that you will come in less than 1%. Even if you are diagnosed with one, get his/her views about it. Because most of the tumors are benign and he will refer you to a competent surgeon for surgery. And there is a high chance you will be cured. Only the point is don’t ever delay to visit a neurologist if you have some neurological symptoms.
Awareness is much more important than treatment. Because in neurological diseases early diagnosis is much important for better treatment and outcome. Always remember time is brain.
