Your Snoring May Be a Warning: 7 Home Measures That Can Help Prevent Sleep Apnea : Sunday Mirror

Loud snoring is not always harmless. If it comes with choking, gasping, pauses in breathing, morning headaches or excessive daytime sleepiness, it may indicate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Home measures may help reduce the risk or severity of OSA, especially in mild or positional cases.

1. Sleep on Your Side
Sleeping on your back can allow the tongue and soft tissues to fall backward and narrow the airway.
Side sleeping may reduce snoring and apnea episodes in some people.

2. Reduce Excess Weight
Extra fat around the neck can increase airway narrowing during sleep. Even modest weight loss may improve sleep apnea symptoms in overweight individuals.

3. Avoid Alcohol at Night
Alcohol relaxes the throat muscles and can worsen airway collapse.
If you snore heavily, avoid alcohol—especially close to bedtime.

4. Be Careful With Sleeping Pills
Some sedatives and sleeping medicines can worsen breathing problems during sleep. Do not stop prescribed medicines yourself, but discuss them with your doctor if sleep apnea is suspected.

5. Keep Your Nose Clear
Nasal allergy, congestion or sinus problems can make nighttime breathing more difficult. Saline rinses and appropriate treatment of allergies may help. Persistent blockage should be medically evaluated.

6. Exercise Regularly
Regular physical activity may improve sleep quality and sleep apnea symptoms, even before major weight loss occurs. Aim for around 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days, if medically suitable.

7. Maintain Healthy Sleep Habits
Keep a regular sleep schedule, avoid very heavy late-night meals, reduce screen exposure before bed and ensure adequate sleep duration.
These measures will not cure significant sleep apnea, but they can improve overall sleep quality.

When Should You See a Doctor?
Seek medical evaluation if you:
– Stop breathing repeatedly during sleep
– Wake up choking or gasping
– Have severe daytime sleepiness
– Wake with frequent morning headaches
– Feel sleepy while driving
You may need a sleep study.
Moderate or severe sleep apnea often requires specific treatment such as CPAP/PAP therapy, oral appliances or other medical interventions.

Remember : Snoring is a sound. Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder.
Sometimes the most concerning moment is not the snoring itself—but the sudden silence when breathing stops.

Do not ignore that warning
