Sleep is an essential part of our life. Every animal needs good sleep for better brain functioning. It’s the time when the brain repairs itself. For better brain conditioning and memory the quality of sleep must be good. Bad sleep quality acts as a catalyst for many neurological conditions.
Our sleep is a beautiful physical phenomena. It isn’t the same in every fraction of sleep. Suppose you slept now, then the type of sleep is different. After a couple of minutes the sleep is different. Sleep starts with dozing. Then it progresses to deep states. The brain and muscles of our body adjust themselves according to the stage of sleep. Then the person lands into deep sleep. Here the eye movement is limited. So these types of sleeps are called non random eye movement (NREM) sleep. After these cycles, eye movement and several dreams come. In this time our muscles become completely paralyzed. So that even if you run in dreams, your body will be fixed to the bed. This type of sleep is called random eye movement sleep (REM). (how to get good quality sleep)

The progression of sleep occurs in cycles. One sleep cycle occurs around 90 minutes. In childhood the REM sleep is more. But if your sleep cycle isn’t complete, even if you sleep it will not be good quality. You might be sleeping 9 hours. Still you will feel drowsy and lethargic. After waking up you will not feel fresh. The whole day you will feel irritable.
For better sleep we need good sleep hygiene. Like good hand hygiene helps us from infection, good sleep hygiene protects us from sleep disorders. Along with that limitation of gadgets and better hydration with food choices are necessary.

What happens when sleep quality is not good!

If sleep quality is not good we suffer from many neurological and psychiatric conditions. The brain is the master organ. Any dis equilibrium in the brain will have its effect on other organs too.
Metabolic diseases
Many cardiological diseases and metabolic diseases are aggravated due to poor sleep. It’s a major factor in poor control in blood pressure. Obesity, hyperlipidemia etc are also aggravated by sleeplessness.
Depression
Stress and depression are very common consequences of sleeplessness. Depression and insomnia are like tandem syndromes. Good sleep improves stress significantly.
Memory loss
For memory consolidation sleep is much necessary. If you have poor quality of sleep memory slowly decays. Attention also decreased after sleep deprivation.
Stroke
Sleep deprivation and poor quality of sleep indirectly cause stroke as well as it decreases outcome of stroke recovery. People with decreased sleep suffer from anxiety very well which later causes hypertension.
Headache
Headache is a very common outcome of poor sleep quality. Most headache patients suffer from sleep deprivation too.
Road traffic accidents
Road hazards are very common in less sleep. Many road accidents occur due to drowsy driver.
Qualitative sleep is a much necessary thing for our body. That’s why we all should try to have good sleep so that we can avoid several dangerous diseases.
