      A sinus headache is a very common type of headache. It’s due to inflammation of the sinuses. Sinuses are air filled spaces in our skull which help us in speaking. It also helps in decreasing the weight of the skull.

Definition and Prevalence : A sinus headache is a type of headache that occurs due to inflammation or infection of the sinuses. It is one type of secondary headache which is very common.

Causes : Sinus headaches are often caused by:

  • Sinus infections (sinusitis)
  • Allergies
  • Cold or flu
  • Nasal polyps
  • Deviated septum

Symptoms: Common symptoms of sinus headaches include:

  • Pain and pressure in the face, particularly in the cheeks and forehead
  • Nasal congestion and discharge
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Difficulty concentrating

Types of Sinus Headaches There are several types of sinus headaches, including:

  • Acute sinus headache: Lasts for less than 4 weeks
  • Subacute sinus headache: Lasts for 4-12 weeks
  • Chronic sinus headache: Lasts for more than 12 weeks.               Diagnosis: Diagnosing sinus headaches typically involves:
  • Physical examination
  • Medical history
  • Imaging tests (e.g., CT or MRI scans)
  • Nasal endoscopy

Treatment Options: Treatment options for sinus headaches include:

  • Antibiotics for bacterial infections
  • Decongestants and pain relievers
  • Nasal corticosteroids
  • Saline nasal sprays
  • Surgery (in severe cases)

Prevention: Preventing sinus headaches involves:

  • Practicing good hygiene
  • Avoiding allergens and irritants
  • Staying hydrated
  • Using a humidifier
  • Getting regular check-ups with your doctor.

It’s one of the most common headaches. Some preventable steps can decrease the frequency and counter the unnecessary work absenteeism.
