Diabetes is one of the most devastating diseases. It’s one of the biggest enemies of our nervous system. From the brain to small peripheral nerves, it can damage any part of neuroaxis. Memory loss or dementia is one of the worst complications of diabetes. Dementia is a very irritating and irreversible disease of our brain. Type 2 diabetes is a worldwide epidemic that affects one in 10 adults, and having diabetes is known to increase a person’s risk of developing dementia.

A GOOD DIET
Diet is very important for preventing memory loss. Even to control diabetes we need a healthy diet. Less carbohydrates and more fibers are a key for better health in diabetics. More fruits and fish items is better for preventing dementia. Remember the mind diet (Link). The mind diet can decrease the risk of dementia by 53%.

ROUTINE EXERCISE
Exercise is a boon for the diabetics. The more exercise one does, the less insulin he/she needs. Exercise increases blood circulation in the brain too. That helps better clearance of the amyloid plaques which get deposited in our brain to cause dementia. Regular 2.5 hours of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of heavy exercise weekly have shown promising results.
SAY NO TO SMOKING & DRINKING
Smoking in diabetes, increases the chance of stroke and neuropathy. A high nicotine diet causes vasoconstriction and decreases the blood supply to the brain and nerves. So quit smoking. Heavy alcohol drinking is linked with early dementia. So the maximum limit is 1 peg for females and up to 2 for males.
LESS SCREEN TIME
Heavy dependence on mobile and TVs have increased peril of diabetics. Screen addiction and screen dependence cause life to be more sedentary. So limit the screen time to maximum 4 hours a day.
FREQUENT SOCIAL CONTACT
Social contact is much needed to keep the brain healthy. Go and meet friends. Talk about ideas, politics etc. Make a like minded friend circle. Talk to them often. Go to social events.
ADEQUATE SOUND SLEEP
Adequate sound sleep is much necessary. Sleep protects memory. It destroys unnecessary memories and preserves better memory. Along with the glymphatic system clears the unnecessary metabolites of the brain. 7-8 hours of sleep is much necessary for prevention of memory loss.

DON’T STOP READING & LEARNING
Learning and reading creates a new memory pathway. It defends us against cell destruction and memory loss. That’s why teachers and doctors prevent memory loss by learning every day. Multilingual people, who learn and use multiple languages suffer memory loss rarely.
Memory is very precious. Diabetics are much prone to it. Always try to prevent memory loss. It’s better to prevent memory loss rather than treatment. Because once memory is gone, it’s irreversible.
